April 2012

The spring is a great time to stock triploid grass carp in ponds due to the cool temperatures and the benefit of having them stocked before the start of blooming aquatic vegetation. Grass Carp should be stocked between April and May, before vegetation is actively growing. Triploid grass carp purchased at this time of year are robust after completing a full growing season and dormant from cool water temperatures. This allows for improved handling and stocking, ultimately resulting in more effective vegetation control.  Once water temperatures begin to rise in the spring the fish will emerge unscathed from their dormant state with a racing metabolism and a need to consume an abundance of aquatic vegetation. Triploid grass carp purchased and stocked during the summer do not handle as well due to their high metabolism. Stocking triploid grass carp during this time period is often unsuccessful due to high water temperatures, low oxygen concentrations and dense aquatic vegetation resulting in poor aquatic vegetation control.

If you would like The Pond and Lake Connection to begin the permitting process to stock your pond(s) with Triploid Grass Carp this spring, please email your request to pondconnection@gmail.com or call our office at 203-426-7055.

New Service Offered by The Pond and Lake Connection

As a partner of The Mapping Network, The Pond & Lake Connection now offers state of the art mapping services for aquatic resources.  The Pond and Lake Connection is The Mapping Network's provider in the northeast. As part of our services, we offer state of the art mapping services for ponds and lakes. Our lake and land mapping services and products are second to none and provide golf course superintendents, property owners and managers with the most accurate information available on the market.

Pond and Lake Mapping Cost effective management of a lake or pond requires a thorough understanding of the aquatic resource. It is critical to know the exact acreage, depths and water volume of a lake to make the right management decisions, including fish species selection, stocking densities, habitat placement, algae and aquatic weed control, and lake dredging requirements. Our 3D map of your pond or lake will provide the information needed for optimal enhancement, maintenance and enjoyment.

In addition to our primary pond and lake mapping services (i.e., the contour and 3D formats), we also offer comprehensive and detailed mapping of bottom sediment. The sediment map, which illustrates site-specific sediment depths and volumes, can be used to construct accurate lake dredging plans.

For specialized needs, we can also map various features of the resource. These may include, but not limited to, aquatic vegetation beds, wetlands, streams, irrigation canals, inlet and outlet features, dam facilities, habitat structures, boat ramps and fishing piers. These features can be added to each type of map, depending upon the client's needs.

Our specialized lake mapping service provides the detailed, accurate information landowners and property managers need to maximize their lakes' potential. Clients can choose to receive various formats of maps, including high quality printed maps and large wall maps. Using highly specialized equipment, our certified technicians collect data in the field, which are then analyzed and processed by professional GIS specialists; using the best available printing equipment and media.

For additional information about lake mapping, please visit our Lake Mapping page.

keeton solar pond bubbler

The Pond and Lake Connection recently installed a 2 diffuser solar aerator in New Preston, CT.

Sub-surface diffusers provide ponds and lakes with superior aeration, circulation, and de-stratification. Dissolved oxygen (DO) levels are increased throughout the entire water column with the use of bottom-mounted diffusers. The micro-bubbles entrain bottom water and synergistically lift it to the surface where atmospheric oxygen is absorbed and then transferred throughout the water column. The solar aeration systems are great for ponds without electricity nearby and do not cost anything to run!

July 2010
Kasco Marine's new sub-surface aeration system, The Robust Aire, became available for the 2010 season. The Robust Aire is available from 1 to 6 diffusers, 120 and 240 Volt and with the option of no cabinet, post mounting or a large cabinet. Each system includes 100' of weighted tubing per diffuser. For additional information about the Kasco Marine Robust Aire, please visit the Kasco sub-surface aeration page.
